BMX IN NEW ZEALAND

There are 32 clubs around New Zealand that are open to new membership. Anyone keen to give BMX racing a go should visit a club. When there you can ask if they have rental bikes or bring your own. As a starter, any bike will do. You can update your bike as you get more serious about the sport later.

BMX is an action sport so protective gear is mandatory. A full-face helmet is required (most clubs can hire these out) long sleeve top and long pants with closed-toe shoes protect your skin, then full finger gloves protect your hands. These are the essentials. Further protection is recommended and can be sourced from the club or a local bike store.
 

BMX is a fun, fast, family-oriented cycling sport and no matter what your age if you are keen to try BMX racing, you can find your nearest club and head along to a training session.

BMX, an abbreviation for bicycle or bike motocross.  BMX began when young cyclists rode motocross tracks for fun, racing and stunts, eventually evolving specialized BMX bikes and competitions.  There are different types of BMX racing over a set course where the fastest across the finish wins or freestyle BMX which includes tricks and jumps that are judge on technical difficulty.

Local clubs have helpful, knowledgeable people and often Clubs can supply rental bikes so you can try BMX and decide whether it’s something you’d like to do more.
